NBS 8484 bringing clarity to the Lone Worker Safety Services market.

With an ever increasing number of lone worker services available on the market, it is important to understand the advantages of contracting services from a supplier certified to BS 8484. Craig Swallow, Chairman of the British Security Industry Association’s (BSIA) Lone Worker section, discusses ensuring effective access to the Police.

More than six million people in the UK currently work either in isolation or without direct supervision, often in places or circumstances that put them at potential risk. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) believes that this number is only going to increase further as practices such as sub-contracting, outplacement and teleworking continue to grow, risks to mobile workers are also likely to increase. The rapid development of communication technologies over the past decade has made it easier for employees in the UK to carry out their job away from their usual place of work, or in solitude. Almost by definition, lone working can be both intimidating and at times dangerous, so the protection of lone workers involves a two-fold approach: to provide safeguards for the workers and also to offer reassurance & support to the employers involved.

Naturally, with an increase in the number of lone workers in the UK, we have seen an influx of lone worker devices to the market; ranging from applications on smartphones to dedicated GPS/GSM Lone Worker devices. These devices are connected to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), which receives and manages an activation and can quickly request emergency services or other appropriate response if required. The ARC can also collect valuable audio or visual evidence...

Bold Integrated Lone Worker Monitoring Platform

Many lone worker protection devices are monitored in proprietary management software or web applications provided by the manufacturer. If only one device is ever used, and the device software is reasonably functional and stable, this can be a cost effective solution. However, when there is a requirement to use devices from different manufacturers or the device software has only limited functionality, this can be a problem for the control room.

Bold Gemini software was designed and developed as an integrated monitoring platform supporting a range of security technology, including lone worker protection devices such as TWIG, Romad and Identicom as well as smart phone apps. Incorporating worldwide GPS-based people and asset tracking, the Bold Locator module provides a fast and accurate location fix as soon as a call for help is generated by the user. When an alert is raised, the system auto answers the call and immediately starts recording. The alert is presented to the operator as a high priority event and can instantly be verified by listening in to the recorded and live audio. The option to switch to live two way audio allows the operator to reassure the user that the alert is being promptly responded to.

Responses may be automated, for example, sending a SMS or email message to a co-worker or, where an attack has been verified, an operator can contact the Police for immediate response. The ACPO Unique Reference Number scheme for obtaining Police response and false alarm management is supported in the software. Alerts can be created by Geofence, by scheduled location traces and by ‘man down’ alarms. All alarm data, audio and operator actions are logged in the system, and activity reports can be created for review....

NSI Gold is widely recognised as the highest level of certification across the security industry as well as the Police, Fire and Rescue services. Becoming Gold Standard certified offers a number of advantages to businesses eligible for the accreditation.
