Dynamic Domes
By Pauline Norstrom, Chairman, BSIA CCTV Section
On the frontline of CCTV, dome cameras, now more than ever, are making their presence felt and, to a large extent, have become the option of choice for a growing range of commercial and public space applications. The widespread deployment of these cameras is certainly proving to be an attractive proposition for installers and end users alike given their inherent
flexibility; aesthetic appeal compared to traditional designs; ability to
effectively track suspects unobtrusively and the widespread availability of
vandal proof options so domes can be deployed as readily outdoors as they are inside.
Flexible Deployment
With regards to the flexibility of installation and operation, dome cameras
continue to score highly. It is now perfectly possible to find them
surface-mounted, hung from the ceiling or on internal and external walls and even inside vehicles, such as buses, for covert and overt surveillance. With some models a 180° tilt even allows the camera view to be perpendicular to the mounting surface which is ideal for looking along walls, such as adjacent to an ATM, or monitoring a fire exit.
As mentioned, the adoption of robust, vandal resistant, domes has made this type of camera much tougher and meant, in recent years, that domes have moved well beyond their indoor CCTV roots. Utilising materials such as polycarbonate for the camera bubble means that many of today's dome cameras are able to withstand a considerable degree of punishment making them a realistic proposition for exposed external locations, such as car parks and town centres, where they may be liable to attack by criminals - trying to hide their activities - and vandals engaged in anti-social behaviour. FLIR D-Series thermal imaging cameras
As requested by many users, the FLIR D-Series have an esthetical design due to the thermal multi-sensor security dome. These thermal imaging cameras are the perfect replacement for day/night dome cameras, providing clear 24/7 imaging capability in an attractive, discrete dome-style enclosure. Also requested by many users is a flexible integration of the cameras into any existing TCP/IP network. The FLIR D-Series can be fully controlled over a PC. No additional cables are required. Using this configuration all activity can be monitored over the network, even if being thousands of kilometers away.
Thanks to the FLIR D-Series people can see during daylight AND in the darkest of night. The FLIR D-Series can protect your perimeter 24/7 and each intruder will be detected in practically all weather conditions. Thermal imaging cameras are also extremely useful during daylight. Thermal contrast is extremely difficult to mask. Someone trying to hide in shadows or bushes and people that are trying to camouflage themselves, will become clearly visible on a thermal image. Thermal imaging cameras are also not blinded by the glare from the sun. Read More |

Basler Unveils Full HD IP Dome Cameras with Auto Focus Functionality
Digital camera specialist Basler is introducing two new IP dome camera models. The upcoming BIP2-D1920c-dn (Outdoor, AF) and BIP2-D1920c-dn (Indoor, AF) models feature auto focus functionality. They provide Full HD resolution (1080p) at real-time video frame rates of up to 30 fps. At their maximum resolution of 3 megapixels, the new camera models still deliver images at 20 fps.
The integrated auto focus functionality makes dome camera installation even simpler; the lens can easily be focused through the camera’s web application: "With the new auto focus functionality, manual focusing is a thing of the past," states Björn Weber, Product Manager at Basler. "Our customers can continue to benefit from the enhanced ease-of-use of our IP dome cameras."
The two Full HD dome camera models offer the choice of MJPEG, MPEG-4, and H.264 compression. Up to two image streams can be encoded using any encoder type combination, e.g., one stream with H.264 compression and the other stream with MJPEG or MPEG-4 compression. It is also possible to encode both streams using the same encoder type, such as H.264. In addition, Basler IP Fixed Dome Cameras offer a choice of two different H.264 compression profiles, one of which is the High Profile (up to level 5) – the same standard used in Blu-ray technology. Under the brand name of AMGPanogenics – a sister company established by AMG Systems’ founder and managing director Dr Alan Hayes and David Myers – the organisation has just launched two five megapixel, 360 degree network cameras, designed, developed and manufactured in the UK.
The revolutionary PanoCam360 range offers the very latest in surveillance capability from 360 degree cameras with absolutely no moving parts whatsoever. It streams 12.5 frames per second and the on-board de-warping reduces the processing requirement back in the control room. Offering up to 14 de-warped video streams/independent camera views simultaneously alongside the full-resolution fish-eye view, makes PanoCam360 the most powerful and versatile 360 degree camera range available. It provides complete situational awareness from a single camera.
Founder and MD of AMG Systems, Dr. Alan Hayes says, “AMGPanogenics specialises in intelligent imaging solutions. We develop cutting-edge hardware and software technologies for the global security industry and incorporate technologies manufactured by Panogenics, a sister company to AMG Systems. The AMGPanogenics brand thus stands for advanced, cutting edge, high quality IP Video technology. We are very excited to be launching such an innovative new product. To the best of our knowledge, there is no other 360 degree camera available offering such a high number of simultaneous streams from the camera combined with a 12.5fps frame rate. PanoCam360 is already fully integrated with a number of renowned NVR/video management products.” Read More |

Conway Security Products Heritage II
Conway Security Products is one of few manufacturers to produce dome cameras exclusively from a base in the United Kingdom. Established over 25-years ago, Conway is recognised by installers and end-users as a mainstay of the CCTV manufacturing industry.
The company’s Heritage II dome features a choice of zoom cameras ranging from x18 to x36, high speed pan and tilt, integrated alarm handling, auto-detect protocols for straight-forward integration with third party control equipment and an option for dynamic privacy. All of these features are complemented by a wide selection of standard and custom mounting solutions.
The Heritage range was originally developed for the town centre market where planning constraints often necessitate a balancing act between system performance and permissible product aesthetics. Traditionally, ‘shoe-box’ housings and pan and tilts were at best frowned upon and at worst forbidden. Using a camera in a street light fixture solved the aesthetic issue as the look of the unit blended in with its environment.
However, some manufacturers found that simply bolting one unit inside another unit that was designed for a totally different application resulted in image quality being compromised. Sacrificing image quality undermined the basic purpose of the camera and therefore the solution could not be considered effective. Read More |

Samsung introduces new H.264 network speed dome camera range
Samsung has introduced a new series of network speed dome cameras which are collectively designed to provide a solution for airports, ports, car parks, industrial estates and retail parks, as well as a wide range of other environments where high performance PTZ functionality is required.
All four new ONVIF compliant models, which incorporate Samsung’s highly acclaimed SV-5 DSP chipset, are able to capture 4CIF resolution images at 25 frames per second and feature Progressive Scan to optimise the high quality video capture of moving objects, making it possible to read car number plates, for example, without a motion blur effect.
The SNP-3371 is equipped with a powerful 37x optical zoom as is its weatherproof counterpart the SNP-3371TH, which has an object Auto-Tracking feature and is supplied in an integrated housing for easy installation. The SNP-3302 has a 30x zoom capability and the housed version, the SNP-3302H, is IP66 rated.
“These new speed dome cameras offer a number of significant additional features compared to previous models including Power over Ethernet ( PoE+ and hPoE ) which can power a device without the need for a local power supply and thereby reduce installation time and costs,” said Tim Biddulph, IP Product Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe Ltd. “They also utilise H.264 compression to minimise bandwidth requirements with the option of using MPEG-4 or MJPEG compression. This means that customers have the flexibility to choose to simultaneously transmit up to ten different streams of images to multiple locations at various frame rates, including real time, at different resolutions.” Read More |
