Merseyside Regeneration Scheme Protected By Charter Security Shutters

The multi-million pound Stockbridge Village regeneration project, featuring a new primary school, neighbourhood centre, library and a supermarket, is being protected by Charter-Integr8 built-in roller shutters from Charter Specialist Security Ltd.

Part of a wider area regeneration scheme by Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, this innovative project has transformed the village centre to create a welcoming focal point for residents and visitors.

Fundamental to the project has been the desire to create an open site, without the use of fencing, walls etc., whilst still providing protection for the buildings out of hours through the use of security shutters on doors and windows. Architects 2020 Liverpool searched for a solution that didn’t impact negatively on the design of the buildings and the feeling of openness, whilst at the same time provided a good level of security. Of particular concern were the large glazed features on the school and swimming pool in the neighbourhood centre.

2020 Liverpool’s solution was to use Charter-Integr8 security shutters that are integrated into the actual fabric of the building. In the raised position, the shutter and all its mechanics are completely concealed from view. In the lowered position, the shutters ensure effective security whilst matching the style of the building (the shutters can be powder coated to any RAL colour).

52 Integr8 180LS Lintel Shutters have been fitted across the new Stockbridge Village buildings. The innovative design incorporates the security shutter system within a structural lintel and cavity closer and can be used with standard, corner and arched windows. For the swimming pool, this was ideal to cope with the large glazed corner. 2020 Liverpool and Charter worked together to find a suitable solution for this expansive glazed feature, eventually resulting in adapting the window design to bring the structure externally in order to accommodate the shutters.

In addition, eleven Charter-Integr8 180BS oscillating and rolling shutters have been used at the primary school on the south facing elevations. Using the same design as the 180LS, the 180BS has the added advantage of having adjustable slats on the shutter curtain, enabling the creation of a brise soleil when in the lowered position. Such a feature is ideal for IT suites where a combination of security and solar control is required.

Internally one 180FR fire shutter and two 180FL fire curtains have been installed to assist with the fire strategy.
