Amazing biometrics – from identifying over a billion residents to catching criminals
Amazing biometrics – from identifying over a billion residents to catching criminals, from use in the battlefield and at borders to mobile phones – get the latest on how biometrics are being used today at Biometrics 2010
At Biometrics 2010 [Westminster, London, 19-21 October 2010], more than 50 top international speakers will convene to reveal how biometric technology such as fingerprint, facial and iris recognition is being used for large-scale government projects such as the world largest deployment of biometrics by the Unique ID Authority of India to law enforcement and border control. Away from governmental applications, biometrics are set to become more mainstream in customer facing applications such as mobile phones and in the finance industry. The 3-day conference features numerous case studies from around the world, takes a close look at the results from the latest trials and tests and explores topical concerns. It is supported by a large exhibition featuring over 50 exhibitors.
You are invited to attend the conference sessions at Biometrics 2010. Topical presentations which may be of particular interest are highlighted below. Details of all presentations are listed at: www.biometrics2010.com/programme.htm
Uniquely Identifying 1.2B Residents
A complete review of the Unique ID Authority of India’s identity management system and the enormous challenges that it poses due to the 1.2billion population it endeavours to service. After the imminent launch by the Indian Prime Minister, the enrolment, deduplication, allocation of numbers and authentication services are expected to begin on a scale which will be unparalleled in the world in terms of database size, diversity, usage and complexity. The speakers will describe the multi-vendor biometrics solution that the UID has commissioned and the need to create elastic computer grids to deal with the enormous peak loads associated with biometric deduplication of over a billion individuals. They will also touch upon some of the architectural features of the private cloud based eGovernance platform that has been designed to address the demanding needs of the UID project.
- Srikanth Nadhamuni, Head of Technology and R.S. Sharma, Director General from the Unique ID Authority of the Government of India will present on Wednesday 20 October 2010 at 12.00
Person authentication using face and voice on a mobile phone: From research to reality
Biometrics offer optimal reliability in determining the identities of mobile users and since more and more portable devices are equipped with a microphone and video camera, face and voice biometrics are the natural choices for mobile biometric authentication. However, mobile biometric authentication is difficult and complex due to changes in environment and conditions and because the system should be run entirely on a mobile device with limited resources and without draining the battery. This talk will present the outcome of the EU FP7 project "Mobile Biometry" (MOBIO) that has looked at developing and evaluating core algorithms for mobile face and voice biometric authentication.
- Sébastien Marcel, the FP7 MOBIO project coordinator, will present on Thursday 21 October 2010 at 10.35.
Taking signatures seriously - Combining biometric signatures and digital signatures to secure processes in the financial sector
A complete update on the increasing importance of electronic signatures based on handwritten signatures and their integration in the digital workflow. In applications where signatures are established as the de facto means of confirming the intent of an individual, Dynamic Signature Recognition offers a smooth migration from paper to electronic processes. The presentation will cover the various aspects to be considered when working with handwritten signatures
- Santiago Uriel Arias, Technology Vice Secretary (CIO) of the Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks will present on Wednesday 20 October 2010 at 09.05.
Secure ID – Biometrics at the border – A practical case study
The United Kingdom Borders Agency is making further radical changes in the way it operates its front line controls: for the first time, Secure ID has introduced real time biometric processing to a substantial cohort of the passengers entering through UK ports. This has been a highly complex and successful project, delivered to time and under budget. The speaker will take you through the project from concept to delivery, will share lessons learned – some of them unexpected – and give an insight into what the future holds through the next stages.
- Angela Kikugawa, Assistant Director and Project Manager Secure ID from the United Kingdom Border Agency will present on Tuesday 19 October at 14.10
