Careful Application of External Perimeter Detection Systems Can Provide Significant Cost Savings
The security of most large exposed sites tends to consist of physical barriers such as a fences or walls, CCTV coverage, and internal security protecting any vulnerable buildings or facilities within the confines of the site.
However, the careful application of external perimeter detection systems can provide significant cost savings in terms of manpower, loss recovery and damage limitation, quickly recovering the initial capital outlay. These systems, integrated with the existing features mentioned before, greatly enhance the security of any site by providing an early warning of intruders, allowing the necessary action to be taken before it is too late.
It is of course more difficult than designing systems for the controlled environment found inside most premises. We need to have a system that not only suits the type of perimeter but also one that can perform equally well in all extremes of weather conditions. After all, 4am on a January morning in Norway is markedly different from 2pm on a July afternoon in Spain.

Bosch Perimeter Surveillance
Every perimeter surveillance application is different. Unique layouts combined with varied surrounding terrain; land, trees, water, hills neighbouring buildings and infrastructure all impact upon the installation of a perimeter surveillance system.
Security personnel need adequate warning and response time for a breach of the perimeter. It is not sufficient to simply know a breach of the perimeter has occurred.
Security officers need more information in order to react appropriately. They need to know the type of threat with which they are dealing, from where the threat is coming, and where it is headed.
For exceptional performance both day and night, Bosch Security’s EX range of integrated infra-red cameras deliver the most advanced level of day/night imaging available. With analogue, IP and Megapixel variants the EX family can provide 24/7 surveillance capabilities in all weather conditions . The EX85 is at the pinnacle of today’s most advanced imaging technologies, combining dual megapixel sensors,
IP Infrared Imaging design and Black Diamond night vision technology

Critical Perimeter Security for the UK’s Infrastructure
Perimeter security for critical infrastructure can be a minefield considering the often harsh external environments, the logistical challenge of installing new solutions, the array of technologies and different manufacturers to choose from. Then add in the challenge of civil works such as fencing, lighting and construction and you have a highly complex project on your hands.
Perimeter technology
A perimeter security system isn’t just about surveillance cameras but also video monitoring, video collection, storage and analytics, access and motion detection, access control systems and electronic gates and barriers as well as fencing. Then there is the challenge of transmitting data from these systems over large distances usually to a central control room, where it can be managed using a physical security information management system. A thorough risk assessment is essential to ascertain where and how these solutions should cost effectively be deployed.

Super LoLux ™ analogue CCTV cameras ideal for low lighting areas
Ideal for perimeter protection, the new eco-friendly models deliver improved images and low-light sensitivity with reduced power consumption
JVC Professional Europe Ltd. has introduced four new high-resolution, 1/3-inch CCD analogue surveillance cameras. The TK-C2201E and TK-C2201WPE are compact, fixed dome cameras, while the TK-C9200E and TK-C9300E are conventional cameras, all with outstanding low light performance.
The four new models feature new Super LoLux™ technology, delivering precise colour reproduction under virtually zero light conditions; as low as 0.05 lux in colour mode and 0.006 lux in black-and-white mode. This allows for clear images even in the poorest lighting conditions, ideal for perimeter security.

Perimeter Security - Forewarned is Forearmed!
Fact ; traditional perimeter solution with fences, CCTV cameras and sensors no longer keep the really determined people out. A series of incidents at UK international airports has highlighted that traditional reliance upon physical barriers, security patrols and manned monitoring of CCTV is inadequate to counter the threat from a determined intruder. Perimeter security used to demarcate the boundary and secure the assets from theft. It was meant to deter someone getting in, stealing something of value and getting out again - undetected.
The problem, is that the intruder threat of today is of an altogether different magnitude. The intruder(s) are not necessarily concerned about detection and the objective is not to escape without being caught. Rather, the aim is to cause as much damage and disruption on the inside as possible. This level of threat requires a different approach to security and a different level of risk assessment. The only way forward is to look at how we can facilitate an early warning solution which delivers earlier detection and allows more time for the corresponding reaction. This calls for new more sophisticated sensor technology to work in an integrated solution with the existing perimeter solutions already in place

Solutions for Perimeter Security
Julie Hartley, Intruder Business Product Manager at ADI Global Distribution, shares hints and tips to help installers understand the facts behind installing Perimeter Beam security.
Perimeter Security is a vital area of security that has applications ranging from the protection of construction sites to prestigious applications such as museums and financial institutions. There is a demand for early warning perimeter devices to work in conjunction with existing installed security systems/monitoring rooms. Securing of attractively landscaped or environmentally sensitive areas calls for an effective, discreet intruder detection system. Beams are an effective method of external security and can be installed with existing and new alarm systems.
There are two different types of beams that can be used in perimeter security. Twin beams are generally smaller and rely on two beam paths to be broken to generate an alarm, quad beams form a lattice of 16 beams which need to be broken making them more reliable over long distances. The site and the application requirements will help you define which beam technology should be chosen.
