GPS Perimeter Systems the complete range of Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems
GPS Perimeter Systems supply a complete range of Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS) designed to provide early warnings of potential threats. The concept is simple; deploy a series of detectors around the asset or people to be protected, far enough away from them to provide adequate time to make an appropriate response.
An extremely large number of variables must be looked at when considering perimeter security. The topography of the site, the end user requirements (visible or invisible security etc), the existence of physical barriers such as walls and fences, and the climate of the area are all variables that will impact upon the suitability of a security system.
No one system or technology can provide the correct, most effective solution for all these different applications.

Shedding Light on Network Rail Thieves
Following a spate of vandalism and incidents of cable theft within various parts of Network Rail’s infrastructure, TEW Plus Ltd instigated a successful eight week trial of an intruder deterrent system using Derwent new AEGIS White Light LED illuminators. The recent acquisition of security lighting specialists Derwent by Bosch Security Systems has allowed Bosch to expand its already extensive CCTV portfolio to satisfy and even wider range of applications and needs.
During the day intruders are detected by sensors which trigger a loudspeaker to issue a stern warning to trespassers to leave the site. However, at night the sensors trigger the powerful AEGIS UFLED White Light illuminators, which flood the scene with visible light. A day/night camera captures a colour image of the action and sends a text alert and emails pictures over the mobile phone network to alert that there is an intruder.
Dave Farman, Director of TEW Plus says: “The system really works. We can claim a 100% success rate. Since installation there have been no repeat incidents of vandalism or cable theft.”

SST appreciates the importance of ‘double knock’ solutions
Security Systems Technology (SST), the Middlesex-based installer, provides a range of complementary surveillance and security services of which perimeter intrusion protection is a core offering.
SST appreciates the importance of ‘double knock’ solutions whereby stages of a building’s perimeter can present an intruder with progressive difficulties as they try to penetrate a site. Challenges often operate on the ‘onion skin’ principle with physical obstacles, buried sensors and CCTV surveillance accompanied by scene analysis combining to frustrate intruders and alert facility managers and police.
Our engineers work with Video Analytics specialists Ipsotek to provide perimeter intrusion or ‘sterile zone’ solutions that automatically alert security operatives to unauthorised incursions across boundaries or into controlled areas. Other approaches such as vibration and volumetric detection have a role to play in securing large perimeters but false alarms are prevalent – notably with buried sensor cables – since large animals can trigger the system and calibration for weight becomes a delicate issue.
SST appreciates the role that sensor equipment can play but believes firmly in the Video Analytics approach and their system has now gained UK Home Office i-LIDS® approval as a Primary detection system for sterile zone monitoring. This is the highest approval level awarded under UK government evaluation and means that SST customers opting for their solution benefit from optimum and proven protection.

OPTEX DETECTORS KEEP PATIENTS SAFE AT SOUTH EAST PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL
A variety of innovative external detectors from Optex Europe have been installed at a psychiatric hospital to prevent patients from leaving the site, accessing out of bounds areas and escaping via the roof or causing themselves injury.
Following a change in Home Office guidelines, psychiatric hospitals have been obliged to upgrade their security. Brighton-based installer Securitel, which has worked with the hospital for more than seven years, was asked to provide a suitable means of detecting patients attempting to enter the hospital secure perimeter from the building and especially to prevent patients from accessing the roof.
As roof barriers were costly and aesthetically unsuitable Securitel’s Managing Director Andy Parker trialled various electronic ‘barriers’ in the form of PIR detectors but was plagued by false alarms, notably from wildlife such as squirrels. Then he turned to Optex: “The Optex range of detectors has been on site for a number of weeks now and we have not had a single false alarm,” he says.

WELSH INSTALLER DEPENDS ON OPTEX
A major garage and forecourt facility in Swansea has found an innovative way of preventing vandalism and theft by using a combination of detectors from Optex Europe specificied and installed by Cardiff-based installer Apollo Alarms.
Paul Burch, Managing Director of Apollo Alarms, has been designing CCTV systems for Corner Park Garages in Swansea for four years. Initially he specified a solution that included 40 early technology REDWALL three-metre beams to provide a 'virtual' perimeter. However, trees have since been planted in the compound, presenting an even greater challenge with regards false alarms, as Paul explains: “The REDWALL detectors have performed well over the years with very few false alarms,” he says, “but the system needed to be upgraded. We decided to change the detection pattern away from the perimeter of the property line to the main vehicle display areas of the site.”
