Physical protection – better securing your premises
The subject of physical security is essential for any business of any size. The basic elements of this technology demand careful attention but as well as installing high quality systems it is also vital that businesses understand the importance of key control. Clive Baker, Chairman of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA)'s Physical Security Equipment Section, examines the crucial role of physical security measures and the importance of key control.
Physical protection such as security rated locks for accessible windows and doors, security grilles or shutters to name but a few, can all be used in combination to protect premises both from intrusion and against vandalism. Such products help to harden a building against unlawful entry by making an intruder's task difficult, time-consuming and noisy. Of course, their effectiveness is directly related to the intruder's skill and determination, which, in turn, depends upon the perceived benefits of crime.

Comment by: Dr Steffan George, development director, Master Locksmiths Association
Over the years security has dramatically grown in prominence and we are increasingly aware of threat – be it in the form of burglary, data theft, physical assault or even terror attacks. As a society we are much more conscious of potential dangers than we were ten years ago and security is a regular talking point at boardrooms and dinner tables alike.
Although as security professionals we don’t want to scaremonger the public, we do believe in publically advising on the steps recommended to ensure people feel safe at home, at work and at leisure.

CISA Astral S 24 Cylinders
The new CISA Astral S 24 cylinder from Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies successfully complies with Clause A parts 1 & 2 of PAS 24:2007 straight from the box and without the need for armoured handles or guards.
MLA/BSI approved with the British Kitemark, the innovative cylinder design incorporates a snap-resistant patented laminate steel core. This not only increases the overall flexural snap and pull resistance, but also acts as a visual deterrent. In addition, a break line has been incorporated, which will cause the cylinder to snap off, should the handles on a PVCu or composite door be removed.
