IP CCTV CAMERAS IN FOCUS

By Pauline Norstrom, Chairman, BSIA CCTV Section

When it comes to the front end of CCTV, certainly IP and IP-enabled CCTV cameras offer some advantages over analogue units including wider distribution and use of video images, plus potentially cheaper and easier installation and maintenance of cameras, without the requirement for coaxial or fibre optic cabling. That is because they can operate using an Ethernet-based local and wide area (LAN/WAN) network, as well as virtual private networks (VPNs) and wireless links using technology such as radio and microwave transmission.

Looking at specific IP CCTV camera developments there have been tremendous improvements in the ability of such cameras to deal with difficult lighting conditions. We are now seeing solutions coming on to the market which offer a wide dynamic range which means, in practice, that the camera can provide a high quality picture when other solutions would struggle. To achieve this dark areas captured at normal shutter speeds and bright areas at a high shutter speed are automatically combined into a single image without any under or over exposure.

The introduction in recent years of High Definition (HD) megapixel IP CCTV cameras, and associated HD recording and display solutions, was a major watershed. Specifically in terms of the quality of images which can now be provided and, crucially, the potential to accurately identify suspects and achieve successful convictions. HD IP CCTV cameras are being particularly favoured for high risk environments such as banking where the identification of faces is a prerequisite. Until relatively recently film was really the only way by which banks could achieve the kind of detail which they required for evidential purposes. Other sectors which have been early adopter's of HD CCTV include: retail, corporate headquarters, urban centres and security sensitive military installations.

An ‘Outstanding’ Network Camera from Samsung Techwin.

Samsung Techwin’s SNC-570 network camera is outstanding according to Benchmark Magazine which awarded the camera an overall rating of 9/10.

Benchmark Magazine reviewed six network cameras in its July/August 2009 edition, all of which were rated for their product design, ease of installation, features and functions and video quality. The Samsung Techwin SNC-570 dual codec network camera was the only one of the six cameras tested in the edition to be awarded the prestigious ‘Outstanding’ status.

“In the three years that Benchmark Magazine has been publishing its  product reviews, we understand that only seven other products have achieved an “outstanding” rating” said Peter Ainsworth, European Product Manager for the professional security division of Samsung Techwin. “Our customers across Europe are already sharing Benchmark’s admiration for this dual codec network camera which enables simultaneous real-time transmission of both MPEG-4 and JPEG images.”

JVC’s IP cameras provide an environmentally-friendly option for critical surveillance applications

JVC has an extensive range of PoE security cameras; including environmentally-friendly low-power PoE PTZ cameras and Megapixel box cameras. From retail and commercial use, through to government, education, healthcare and transport, JVC offers a comprehensive range of products, fully packed with the latest innovations and designed perfectly for the task in hand. JVC offers an open architecture and plug and play features which greatly simplify installation and configuration for system integrators.

JVC has introduced Megapixel technology with the VN-X35U IP camera. This incorporates a 1.3 Megapixel progressive scan CCD to capture high-quality, high-precision images. It can distribute up to Quad VGA (4xVGA), Motion JPEG and VGA MPEG-4, and features Focus Assist mode for accurate focus adjustment and precise imaging. The Quad VGA images allow you to use the VN-X35U like a PTZ camera; using the digital zoom, you can magnify any area of the image and the magnified area can be moved freely to maintain the same zoom ratio. It also features a motion detection function that outputs an alarm, with two inputs and two outputs, whenever movement is detected within a pre-specified area of the image.

EQUIP® Series FROM Honeywell – IP Network solutions

The EQUIP® Series is a family of IP network products composed of cameras, encoders, network video recorders and digital video recorders. With an open architecture and single Application Program Interface (API), Honeywell’s line of EQUIP Series products works consistently across IP-based systems.

The EQUIP Series of IP cameras are available in PTZ, mini-dome or box style.  These IP-ready cameras transmit high quality images over longer distances and are capable of delivering video at a rate of 25 frames per second at 4CIF for real-time, high-resolution video recording. MPEG-4 compression for all video streams provides the cameras with a method for compressing video that is more efficient than MJPEG, giving users better image quality and sharpness and faster video transmission using smaller network bandwidth. A robust camera sabotage feature detects a change in the field of view or focus, and instantly notifies the operator if a camera has been deliberately blinded or otherwise vandalised.

Complete ready-to use surveillance system in one compact camera

  • Bosch announces new IP Camera 200 Series all-in-one CCTV solution
  • IP Camera System that brings sharp, clear color images into the reach of small enterprise
  • Captures days of video footage on SD memory card

Bosch Security Systems is launching a new series of compact cameras that operate as completely self-contained surveillance systems. The IP Camera 200 Series is being introduced as a cost-effective solution to enable small businesses and enterprises to protect and monitor their property. Ready-to-use straight from the box, the new compact cameras can operate without a digital video recorder or PC. As soon as they are plugged in, the cameras start recording, and can store several days of video footage on an SD memory card. All that is necessary is to plug them in and walk away.

The compact camera uses the latest H.264 compression to reduce storage requirements by up to 30% compared with MPEG-4. This helps to keep storage costs to a minimum.

Suitable for applications ranging from small offices, retail shops and minimarkets to day-care centers and classrooms, the new camera is easy to install. No specific expertise is needed. All that is necessary is to plug the camera in and insert an SD card. A single cable connection handles power, viewing and recorded video
