NVR and DVR explained
DVR and NVR are now the major players in the market for image storage devices for CCTV, and although there are clear advantages and limitations to both systems, the choice of which storage technology to adopt will depend largely on the specific requirements and capabilities of each business. Pauline Norstrom, Chairman of the British Security Industry Association’s (BSIA) CCTV section, reports.
Digital Video Recording (DVR) was introduced to the analogue CCTV market as an alternative to the more dated VCR, in the same way that DVDs replaced videocassettes in the 1990s. The rapid change from VCR to DVR technology accelerated as a result of falling prices, improved reliability and a variety of operational advantages to storing footage digitally. For example, compared with tape recorders, digital alternatives provided ease of use and the ability to search for specific recorded data quickly. Moreover, further developments in the technology meant the issues surrounding storage capabilities were soon overcome thanks to the improved capacity of hard drives.

Samsung introduce two new Network Video Recorders which offer the familiarity and ease of use of a DVR
The two new Samsung SRN network video recorder series have been designed to have the look and familiarity of a DVR, whilst delivering all the benefits of an NVR.
Unlike most NVRs, which can only be programmed remotely, the two new models can also be locally configured and controlled with the help of a mouse and a very easy to use multi-language on-screen graphical user interface.
The four channel SRN-470D and sixteen channel SRN-1670D both utilise H.264 compression to minimise bandwidth requirements whilst maintaining high image quality and also offer the option of using MPEG-4 or MJPEG compression. A recording throughput of 64mbps allows both models to simultaneously record in real time 704 x 480 resolution images from all connected cameras or up to Full HD (1920 x 1080) from selected cameras from Samsung’s comprehensive range of IP cameras, Full HD megapixel, HD megapixel, 4-CIF and VGA cameras.
