Forward by Mike Sussman
BSIA Access Control Section Chairman
Over recent years, the Access Control market has remained largely stable. The change of most interest is the introduction of IP enabled devices and the industry acceptance of this as a convenient connection method. Attempts to introduce wireless enabled devices have been made by several manufacturers; however this appears to have been met with some resistance, possibly being seen as a change too radical. The current state of the economy has meant that organisations are delaying the implementation of projects and installers are now looking to products that can add real value in terms of benefits in installation time and cost savings. Comparing the industry to other sectors such as Fire and Safety, the Access Control industry is in need of change. One such area that is seeing such change is the standards arena, with the World Standards Body, IEC now looking at a complete review of the complement of security standards.

SALTO access system core to
multi-application security solution at UWIC Campus
The technology behind a new multi-application security solution for the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) is built on SALTO’s XS4 proximity system and integrates access control with ID card and cashless payment functionality into a single campus wide security system.
UWIC has a policy of installing appropriate security throughout its campuses that not only supports the securing of areas, but also the provision of greater access to its facilities in a controlled and managed way. To achieve this the University required a full upgrade of its networked and offline magstripe access control system to a modern, state-of-the-art product that would provide networked access control and cashless functions via a single card to all staff and students as well as to a number of external users.

BIOMETRICS – THE FUTURE OF LOCKING !
Architect Christopher Sykes looks at the latest advents in biometric access control...
Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies is at the forefront of biometric access control and has decades of experience and an unparalleled track record, with over 70,000 installations across the world. These include the Northern Ireland Prison Service, the US State Department, Japan Automatic Power Company, Ben Gurion International Airport, Rotterdam Harbour and the Port of Felixstowe.
Biometrics is the science of studying physical characteristics of a person such as finger prints, hand geometry or eye structure in order to identify them. Of course, using the body to prove unique identification is not new. Fingerprinting has been around for many years (for example, Historians have found examples of thumbprints being used as a means of unique identification on clay seals in ancient China). More recently, DNA profiling has become a popular method of identification, albeit one not suited to everyday life.

Facial, mimic & voice recognition in one for fail-safe access control
smarti ®, from Databac Group, is an innovative identification solution which applies a combination of face, mimic and voice recognition for multiple functions, including access control, time and attendance and building automation.
smarti ® identifies people by who they are rather than their ID card or key. It also eliminates buddy punching and ghost workers, boosting productivity and ultimately the bottom line.
Databac managing director Charles Balcomb said: “Facial recognition is less intrusive than iris technology, with little action required from the user, and just as effective. smarti ®’s combination of facial recognition with voice and mimic detection makes it among the most secure systems on the market – and it is fantastically easy to use.”
