Securing our critical national infrastructure – access control in the utilities sector

The utilities sector is responsible for the critical elements of our everyday life such as the water and electricity supply, gas and oil. However, changes in the social and political environment, as well as the growing scope and impact of the sector in almost everything we do have increased its vulnerability to threats such as terrorism and vandalism. Utilities companies must therefore adopt security solutions with longevity, supplied by expert and reliable security providers. Mike Sussman, Chairman of the British Security Industry Association’s (BSIA) Access Control section, explains how.

In July 2011, the disclosure of the Department of Homeland Security’s warning of a potential threat to utility facilities in the US served as a further remainder of the ongoing vulnerability of infrastructure in the utilities sectors across the globe. Utility companies have in fact never been more exposed to risks than in today’s climate, where threats include terrorism, natural disaster, theft and internal crime...

National University enhances security for students and staff with wire-free access control from GSD

NUI Galway has implemented a wire-free smart card access control system from Global Security Devices across its growing campus.

The wireless access control system covers more than 300 doors across the campus, on 100 buildings across 243 acres. According to Gerry Nolan, security manager with NUI Galway, the project carried a considerable scale, since buildings vary in size from a shed to a science block and from houses to entire labs. What’s more, the campus is still expanding; a new engineering block has just been completed and another five buildings are currently being built.

“The GSD wireless access control system is very high on spec and it means installation doesn’t disrupt the running of the university. There’s no drilling or cables to be installed so there’s far less of an impact,” explains Nolan. When the largest building on the campus, the science block, was fitted with the GSD system. “Nobody even knew it was going on,” Nolan says.

All of the wireless access control points are managed from a single software application, and Nolan is especially impressed with reporting features in the software which can produce all desired reports as PDF files and export to spreadsheet format...

TDSi launches MIFARE Programmer tool

New product allows users to set their own MIFARE card codes for added security

TDSi, a global leader in access control systems for all sizes of businesses and organisations, has launched its new MIFARE Programmer tool, which offers users the ability to specify their own sectors and keys on their MIFARE access cards. Together with the ability to re-configure TDSi’s standard sector readers to any desired code (without the need for any other parties to be involved) the MIFARE Programmer ensures confidentiality of security data and access control.

TDSi’s Managing Director, John Davies, comments on the MIFARE Programmer, “For companies that need the highest levels of protection; the ability to protect your security codes across the board is a very attractive proposition.  Being able to programme your own MIFARE cards and readers means you can close a potential gap in security that comes from pre-programmed systems. This solution offers real peace of mind. It has been developed from feedback we have had from installers and users, who advised that it would be highly desirable choice for both security and convenience...

SAMS, Samsung’s Access Control Management Software

SAMS, has been updated with a number of practical and user-friendly features added.

Available license-free for projects with up to 40 doors (80 readers) and 1000 users, SAMS now has a Muster Reporting feature which can configured to produce a report as to who is on site at any given time, as well as automatically generate a list in the event of a fire alarm activation.

Also included in the latest version of SAMS is an ID badge production facility. In addition to static text and a company logo, this new feature also allows the addition of dynamic database fields.

SAMS software is now fully compatible with the Samsung SRN-3250 and SRN-6450 network video recorders ensuring that high quality recorded images are always time synchronised with related access control alarm events. “This feature may not at first glance seem be very important. For many years however, users have suffered the frustration of finding that the video they have retrieved from a video recorder relates to an event that may have occurred several seconds or even minutes before or after the actual event they wished to view,” said David Cawley Access Control and Home Security Products Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe Limited...

NEW IMPRO Multi Discipline Reader Combines Style and Flexibility

BPT Security Systems (UK) Ltd. is pleased to announce the latest hardware addition to its Impro access control systems in the form of the flexible, stylish Impro Multi Discipline Reader (MDR).

Access control made easy

Architectural journalist Gideon Sykes examines the problems of security key control, spotlighting how one innovative manufacturer is pioneering access control solutions to meet changing needs and tight budgets.

As technology develops, so do advances in building access and security. To satisfy the ever changing demands of clients, as well as compliance to changing rules and regulations, manufacturers are developing new and inventive solutions. However, regardless of the reasons for upgrading, there is usually one overriding concern – the need to be as cost-effective as possible.

Innovative manufacturers, such as Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies, are continually developing and evolving products. PegaSys Lite, for example, is a simple and cost-effective way to upgrade mechanical locks to electronically-controlled access solutions.

Designed for smaller premises and for a limited number of users, PegaSys Lite is available in two versions: ‘PIN’ which allows access via a keypad and ‘Prox’ for access via a key fob. Both systems, designed for ease of installation, are supplied complete with everything needed to retrofit onto an existing standard European lockcase. The PIN version assigns unique user codes of three to eight digits which can be quickly added or removed at the door. The Prox version is available as a starter kit consisting of one lock, 10 access fobs and a programming card for one door. Additional locks and key fobs can then be purchased to add extra doors or users, as required...
